AVAILABLE SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS
All scholarship applications and further information about these offerings are available in the guidance office career room; and unless otherwise stated, completed applications must be returned to Mrs. Russo in guidance by the deadline date typed on the top of the application.
Students should read application eligibility requirements carefully to make sure they meet the scholarship criteria. It is preferable that applications are typed. At the very least they should be neatly handwritten in one color of ink. Corrections should not be scratched out. Essays and a resume’ should be computer generated and checked for grammar and spelling errors. In the appropriate space of the applications just indicate, “Please refer to attached resume’ or essay.”

WBOC Scholar Athlete
This is open to male and female athletes who are graduating seniors. Applicants must carry a “B” average or higher and be recognized by their coaches for outstanding leadership on the field, in the classroom and through extracurricular activities. Applications must include a transcript and written recommendation from the coach. Entries will be accepted from August 1, 2009 through May 15, 2010.
Macky’s Work Scholarship Program
For those who plan to attend Salisbury University or Wor Wic Community College and have an interest in working in a high volume kitchen, Macky Stansell is offering an excellent opportunity. Students must agree to work part time in the spring and fall and full time June through August at Macky’s Bayside Bar and Grill. For students who maintain a 2.5 gpa for the first two semesters of college, Macky will award $500 per semester. For the following three years if a 3.0 gpa is maintained. Howard P. Rawlings Guaranteed Access Grant
This grant provides an award from the state of Maryland which, when combined with the Federal Pell Grant and other financial aid, will help cover the cost of full-time study at a Maryland college or university. The amount of the award varies up to $13,700 annually and can be used at any public or private college or university. To be eligible, applicants must: be a senior in high school and under 22 years old, must reside in the state of Maryland with parents, have a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA, and meet the family income criteria. Priority applications should be submitted by March 1.
Choptank Electric Trust, Inc.
High school seniors or graduating juniors whose parents or legal guardians are members or employees of Choptank Electric Cooperative are eligible to apply for these $2000 scholarships. Completed applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 22, 2010.
Virginia, Maryland and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives
High school seniors and graduating juniors whose parents or legal guardians are customer-members of an electric cooperative in Virginia, Maryland or Delaware are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Completed applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 22, 2010.
WGMD Sports Booster Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship will be students who exemplify the virtues of athletic competition and scholastic achievement. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 22, 2010.
Northrop Grumman Engineering Scholarship
A $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating high school student in each Maryland county and Baltimore City. Applicants must plan to enroll in an approved engineering program in an accredited college or university, must have a minimum 1700 SAT or ACT score of 27, and a minimum unweighted gpa of 3.5. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 23, 2010.
Delmarva Irish American Club Scholarship
These scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who must demonstrate academic achievement, employment and community service, and leadership and extra-curricular activities. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour
This program is open to juniors whose parents or guardians are members of an electric co-op. This all expense paid trip to Washington, DC will familiarize students with the historical and political environment of the nation’s capital and by visiting elected officials they will increase their knowledge of how the federal government works. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
Berlin/Ocean City Jaycee Memorial Scholarship
This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a Stephen Decatur graduating senior who is a resident of Worcester County. The applicant must have maintained a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA and must show an ongoing commitment to volunteerism and community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
UAW Scholarship Program
In recognizing the impact that the cost of higher education can have on students wishing to further their education, the Region 8 Communication Action Program of the UAW is sponsoring an essay contest which is open to all graduating seniors. Essays are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
TFC Edward A. Plank, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is open to graduating seniors who have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA. Applicants must submit an essay on how crime and/or drug abuse has affected today’s society. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
William B. Blank DACA Scholarship
This scholarship is open to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in agriculture or turf management. Students must have a minimum 2.75 unweighted GPA and demonstrate maturity and commitment to succeed in college level courses. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
Worcester County Library Foundation
This $500 scholarship is open to Worcester County seniors who have exhibited academic achievement, financial need, and individual or group volunteerism. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 24, 2010.
Ocean City Parrothead Club
This scholarship is open to graduating students who are planning to continue their education in a wide range of fields that by their nature work to help others, the community, the environment and social well being of all. All applicants must have demonstrated their interest in helping others through community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Eastern Shore Builders Association
Applicants must plan to attend a four year college and major in architecture, engineering or a construction related field. They must have maintained a minimum 2.5 unweighted gpa and be able to demonstrate participation in extracurricular school or community activities or be able to demonstrated in lieu of that they have been employed. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Ocean City Ravens Roost 44
This scholarship will be awarded to two scholar athletes based on scholarship, leadership and community service. Applicant must participate in at least one varsity sport during the senior year and have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted gpa. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
John Paul Adkins II Memorial Scholarship
Applicants for this scholarship must be a graduating senior from Stephen Decatur High School who plans to pursue a career in criminal justice, public safety, fire protection science/engineering, natural resources, health care professions or environmental science/research. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Worcester County Arts Council
The Worcester County Arts Council will award up to five $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are Worcester County residents interested in pursuing academic careers in the arts. Graduating seniors who will major in the visual, performing, music or media arts are encouraged to apply. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Worcester County Garden Club
This $1000 scholarship is open to a deserving Worcester County senior who plans to attend a two or four year post-secondary school and major in horticulture, botany, biology, environmental studies or a related field. To be eligible students must be full time residents of Worcester County with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 and no grade below a “C”. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Ocean City Marlin Club Ladies Auxiliary Bertha Holloway Memorial Scholarship
To be eligible for this scholarship, applicant must be in the top 20% of the graduating class and show some financial need. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 25, 2010.
Maryland Association of Pupil Personnel Glenn R. Munch Scholarship
The intent of this scholarship is to honor selected students who have overcome adversity and made the readjustments necessary to succeed in college and life. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 26, 2010.
Dr. Joseph Z. Badros Scholarship
Scholarship is open to graduating seniors who have demonstrated maturity, commitment, and academic excellence. Students must have a reputation of good character and be well rounded citizens. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 26, 2010.
Quest Bridge College Prep Scholarship
This program is available to high school juniors who have a strong academic record and an annual household income of less than $60,000. This National College Match program pairs outstanding low-income high school seniors with admission and full scholarships to QuestBridge’s 27 partner colleges. Online applications must be submitted no later than March 29, 2010.
Sons of Italy Scholarship
Two $500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors. Applicants must be of Italian heritage and be able to demonstrate academic achievement, school citizenship and school and/or community service. Applications due into guidance no later than March 29, 2010.
Ocean City-Berlin Optimist Youth Foundation
To be eligible, student must be a senior who has attended Stephen Decatur High School for a minimum of two years. The selection committee will consider applicant’s goals, scholarship, citizenship, community service, extra-curricular activities and motivation. Applications are due into guidance no later than April 1, 2010.
Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians
Applicants for this $1000 scholarship must be graduating students from Stephen Decatur High School, have maintained a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA, and show an ongoing commitment to volunteerism and community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 1, 2010.
Ocean City Lions Club
This scholarship is open to students who plan to pursue some post secondary education or training. Applicants should be of exceptional character who have taken on responsibility outside of the classroom in areas such as: community service, work experience, extracurricular activities or challenges in their personal lives. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 1, 2010.
Ocean Pines Lions Club
The Ocean Pines branch of the Berlin Lions Club will award a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior from Stephen Decatur High School. Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic achievement, involvement in school activities, and a commitment to community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 1, 2010.
Ocean Pines Garden Club
The Ocean Pines Garden Club strives to stimulate interest in gardening, promote horticultural enrichment programs and environmental studies. It also encourages the conservation and protection of our environment. Two non-renewable scholarships will be awarded to qualified graduating seniors who are full time residents of Ocean Pines or who are related to a member of the Ocean Pines Garden Club. Students must have maintained a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA and plan to enroll in any approved degree or certificate granting college or university, technical or vocational school. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 1, 2010.
Junior League of Baltimore Sustainers’ Service Award
This award is a scholarship in the amount of $1000 to be given to a female graduating senior who has performed outstanding volunteer service during her public high school years. Neither financial need nor academic standing will be determining factors in selecting the recipient; the sole criterion will be the quality of the candidate’s volunteer service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 6, 2010.
Worcester County Retired School Personnel Scholarship
This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a career in education. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA and must submit three letters of recommendation attesting to character, integrity, leadership and scholarship. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 7, 2010.
Cavallaro Cleary Visual Art Foundation Scholarship
These scholarships which range from $500 to $2000 will be awarded to high school seniors gifted in the visual arts who are pursuing careers in visual arts. A personal interview as well as a presentation of a portfolio is required. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 7, 2010.
West Ocean City Assocation
Applicants must be residents of West Ocean City, be able to demonstrate financial need and evidence of leadership in school or community activities, and have maintained a minimum “B” average. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
Joseph Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
The Joseph Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to graduates of any Maryland high school who plan to major in education with an emphasis on reading or a reading-related field. Applicants must have maintained a minimum 3.2 unweighted gpa and must document current or previous community service in education-related activities. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
Kiwanis Club of Greater Ocean Pines and Ocean City
Applicants must be able to demonstrate academic achievement, leadership responsibilities, participation in extracurricular activities, community service and some financial need. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
American Legion Auxiliary Boggs Disharoon Post #123
This scholarship is available to graduating seniors from Stephen Decatur High School who plan to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university. To be eligible, student must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA. Financial need will be considered. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
Green Hill Yacht and Country Club Scholarship
This scholarship is open to a graduating senior who plans to attend a 2 year, 4 year or vocational school. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
PEO Sisterhood Chapter AE Scholarship
The PEO Sisterhood is a philanthropic and educational organization committed to bringing women increased opportunities for higher education. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a female student in Worcester, Wicomico or Somerset county. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
Lower Shore Bowie State Alumni
This scholarship is open to Lower Shore students who plan to attend Bowie State University. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 8, 2010.
Quota Club of Ocean City
Applicants for the two scholarships and two book grants will be awarded based on an essay regarding the importance of community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 9, 2010.
Worcester County Educational Support Personnel Scholarship
Any applicant for this scholarship must be the child or grandchild of a member of the Worcester County Educational Support Personnel Association. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 9, 2010.
Art League of Ocean City
This $1000 scholarship is available to students who have shown excellence in the visual, performing or literary arts and plan on pursuing a career in the arts. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 9, 2010.
Farmers Bank of Willards
These scholarships which range from $500 to $1500 are open to graduating students who are able to demonstrate the following: financial need, leadership, academic achievement which includes verification of top 20% class ranking, and community service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 9, 2010.
George, Miles and Buhr Architectural and Engineering Scholarships
These two scholarships are open to students who plan to major in architecture or civil engineering. Applicants must be able to document academic achievements, participation in school and community activities, and be able to clearly state future aims and employment goals. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 9, 2010.
Pat and Dick Hazel Minority Scholarship
Minority students whose primary educational pursuit is education and teaching may apply for this scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, community involvement, academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 15, 2010.
Ocean City Surfrider Foundatin Clean Water/Please, Leave Only Your Footprints Scholarship
This scholarship is open to graduating students who have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted gpa and have participated in Surfrider activities or other environmental activities through one of the recognized partner groups that have been approved by the Ocean City chapter. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 16, 2010.
MPSSAA Minds In Motion Scholarship
This highly competitive scholarship program which awards $1000 to each of four female and four male senior student-athletes who attend an MPSSAA school and participate in MPSSAA recognized sports. The online application is available on MPSSAA.org and must be submitted no later than noon on April 16, 2010.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
Applicants for this scholarship must be African-American females who have maintained a minimum 2.8 unweighted gpa. Applications are do into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
Worcester County Teacher Scholarship
Applicants must be graduating seniors from Worcester County Public Schools who are pursuing teacher certification in a critical shortage subject area and agree to apply for a teaching position in Worcester County Public Schools. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
Daisey Insurance Company Scholarship
This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating student from the Delmarva Peninsula who plans to pursue a degree in agriculture or a related field. The applicant must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA, have demonstrated academic excellence, work experience, and active community involvement. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
Ocean City Surf Heritage “Bill Wise” Scholarship
In an effort to continually support this “ocean-centered” community and environment, the “oc legends” will award scholarships valued at $1000 for continued higher education to avid “water persons” graduating from local high schools, who exhibit a zest for life and water. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
Berlin Fine Arts Scholarship
This $1000 renewable scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to attend a two or four year college or university and major in the visual arts. It will be awarded on the strength of the portfolio and demonstrated financial need. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
Barbara S. Davis Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship will be awarded to two graduating students who plan to pursue a career in teaching. Applicants must have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted gpa and must document current or previous community service in education-related activities or organizations. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 23, 2010.
American Legion Boggs Disahroon Post #123
Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded to students who best exemplify the high qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than April 26, 2010.
Ocean City Lacrosse, Ltd. Scholarship
These two $1000 scholarships will be awarded to one boy and one girl who have played lacrosse at Stephen Decatur High School. Selection will be made based on academic achievement, school and community service, and sports recognition. These scholarships are intended to recognize the well rounded student athlete who has committed to play lacrosse at the collegiate level. Applications due into the guidance office no later than May 3, 2010.
Worcester County Farm Bureau
This $500 scholarship is open to graduating residents of Worcester County who plan to pursue a career in agriculture, forestry, or an area that benefits agriculture. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than May 3, 2010.
Maryland Coastal Bays Foundation
Applicants for this scholarship must have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted gpa and have participated in a Maryland Coastal Bays activity or other environmental activities through a Coastal Bays partner or other recognized environmental group. Applications due into the guidance office no later than May 3, 2010.
Billy Wayne Truitt Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is open to students who have completed the HVACR program at the Worcester Technical High School and plan to pursue post secondary education in the field. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than May 7, 2010.
Drew Smith Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is open to graduating seniors who plan to pursue a degree in golf turf management. Applications are due into the guidance office no later than June 2, 2010.
