The following scholarships and special programs have been made available to the students of Stephen Decatur High School.  The applications may be found in the SDHS Guidance Career Room. Unless otherwise indicated, all scholarship applications are submitted through the guidance office.  Students are to complete the application, making it as neat as possible, and include any attachments necessary.  The application must then be turned in to the guidance office by the deadline date typed on the top.  The guidance office will attach a transcript and submit the application for the student.  If you have any questions, please contact Kay Russo at 410-641-2207.

BERLIN/OCEAN CITY SOROPTOMIST CLUB  VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD – OPEN TO WOMEN IN GRADES 9-12
                The Violent Richardson Award is a recognition program for young women ages 14-17 engaged in volunteer
                activities within their communities or schools.  The local winner will receive $250  and the organization where she
                is the most active as a volunteer also receives $250.  If the applicant becomes a regional winner, she and the
                organization could win an addition $1000.  Applications are due into guidance no later than January 17, 2012.

NASA WALLOPS FLIGHT FACILITY BLACK HISTORY CLUB – OPEN TO SENIORS
The objective of the Wallops Black History Club is to encourage more black students on the Eastern Shore
to make contributions to the fields of physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, computer science and
technology.  Applicants must plan to attend college and major in one of these fields.  Applications are due
into guidance no later than January 20, 2012.

MARYLAND FARM BUREAU – OPEN TO SENIORS
Parents/guardians of the applicant must be members of the Maryland Farm Bureau.  Seven of the ten scholarships
will be offered to agricultural curriculum majors and three will be offered to non-agricultural majors.  Applications
are due into guidance no later than January 25, 2012.

SPUCK AND LIB BENNETT SCHOLARSHIP FUND – OPEN TO SENIORS
This $1500 scholarship is open to seniors whose primary educational pursuit will be in the field of education.
Students must be able to demonstrate financial need, community involvement, academic achievement and
extracurricular activities.  Applications are due into guidance no later than January 30, 2012.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION LEGACY SCHOLARSHIPS – OPEN TO SENIORS
These $4000 scholarships are open to graduating seniors whose parent or grandparent is a member of
the Elks.  Applicants will be judged on the basis of academic achievement, charity, community service and
integrity.  Online applications must be submitted to www.elks.org/enf/scholars no later than February 1, 2012.

KFC COLONEL’S SCHOLARS – OPEN TO SENIORS
The KFC Colonel’s Scholarship will award up to $5000 a year/4 years scholarship to deserving students who
plan to attend a two or four year Maryland public college or university.  Applicants must have maintained a
minimum 2.75 unweighted gpa and be able to demonstrate academic achievement, some financial need, and leadership
and participation in school and community activities.  Online applications must be submitted to www.kfcscholars.org
no later than February 8, 2012.

ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY – OPEN TO SENIORS
This scholarship is open to African-American young women who are seniors and able to demonstrate leadership,
academic achievement, and participation in school and community activities.  Applications are due into guidance
no later than February 10, 2012.

MARYLAND STATE ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants for this scholarship must have participated in two sports for at least two years in each sport and
earned at least one varsity letter in each sport.  They must also have achieved at least two of the following:
a) have a B+ average; b) be ranked in the top 25% of the class; c) have an ACT score of 24 or SAT of 1100 (verbal
and math only).  Applications are due into the guidance office no later than February 22, 2012.

CAMBRIDGE ALUMNAE CHAPTER DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY – OPEN TO SENIOR MINORITY FEMALES
This scholarship is open to senior minority females who have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted gpa
and an SAT score of 1350 or better or an ACT score of 19 or better.  Applications are due into guidance no
later than February 22, 2012.

DWIGHT P. JACOBUS SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants for this scholarship must have maintained a minimum 3.0 unweighted grade point average, demonstrate
financial need, and have been a resident of Maryland for at least one year.  Applications are due into the guidance
office no later than February 23, 2012.

WOMEN’S CLUB OF OCEAN PINES – OPEN TO SENIORS
This scholarship is open to promising students who are full time residents of Ocean Pines and have maintained a
minimum 2.5/4.0 unweighted gpa.  The selection committee will consider financial need, future goals, scholarship,
citizenship, community service, extra-curricular activities and motivation.  Applications are due into guidance
no later than February 24, 2012.

ELKS NATIONAL  VOCATIONAL GRANT PROGRAM – OPEN TO SENIORS
                This scholarship is open to students who plan to pursue an eligible vocational/technical course beyond the high school
level.  Judging will be based on the following criteria: motivation, need, skills, grades, and application neatness.
Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 5, 2012.

SALISBURY-ROTARY SUNRISE SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIOR ATHLETES
This scholarship will be awarded to graduating seniors who have participated in one of their schools’ varsity
athletic teams and are able to demonstrate some financial need.  Grades and test scores will also be a consideration.
Applications are due into guidance no later than March 5, 2012.

WILLIAM B. BLANK DACA SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants for this scholarship must have been accepted into a post secondary course of study in agriculture
production studies, or who are planning to be engaged in a career in agriculture or turf management.  Applications
are due into guidance no later than March 22, 2012.

DR. JOSEPH Z. BADROS SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants must plan to enroll in an accredited college or university and be able to demonstrate good
character, be well rounded,  and have the maturity, commitment and academic record to succeed in
college level courses.  Applications are due into the guidance office no later than March 23, 2012.

DELMARVA POULTRY INDUSTRY – OPEN TO SENIORS
This $1500 scholarship is open to students who plan to attend an accredited institution with an academic major in
a subject relevant to Delmarva’s poultry industry and who is pursuing a career path leading to employment in
some segment of Delmarva’s poultry industry.  Applications are due into guidance no later than March 26, 2012.

SIGNET CLASSICS STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST – OPEN TO JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Students may win a $1000 scholarship by writing an essay on one of five topics for this year’s competition
book, Emma, by Jane Austen.  Essays are due into the guidance office no later than March 26, 2012.

EASTERN SHORE BUILDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants must plan to attend an accredited post secondary institution and major in any of the following
fields: architecture, engineering or a construction related field.  Applications are due into guidance no later
than March 26, 2012.

WILLIAM T. BURBAGE FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
This scholarship is open to seniors who plan to attend a two or four year college.  Applicants must have a minimum
3.0 unweighted gpa and be able to demonstrate participation in leadership activities.  Consideration may be given
to work experience as a substitute for extracurricular activities.  Applicants should also be able to express pride
in growing up on Delmarva.  Applications are due into guidance no later than March 30, 2012.

BERLIN/OCEAN CITY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants must be graduating students at Stephen Decatur High School, must have maintained a minimum
2.5 unweighted gpa, and show an ongoing commitment to volunteerism and community service.  Applications are
due into the guidance office no later than March 30, 2012.

KIWANIS CLUB OF GREATER OCEAN PINES & OCEAN CITY – OPEN TO SENIORS
Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, leadership responsibilities,  and contribution
to school and community service.  Applications are due into guidance no later than March 30, 2012.

GEORGE, MILES & BUHR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ARCHITECTURE AND CIVIL ENGINEERING – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants for these scholarships must plan to pursue a major in architecture or civil engineering.    Applications
are due into the guidance office no later than March 30, 2012.

GREEN HILL YACHT AND COUNTRY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
This scholarship is open to graduating students who plan to attend a two or four year college or vocational
school.  Applications are due into guidance no later than April 10, 2012.

PAT AND DICK HAZEL MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO MINORITY SENIORS
This scholarship is open to minority students who plan to attend a college in Maryland or Delaware and whose
primary educational pursuit must be teaching.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need,
community and extra-curricular involvement, and academic achievement.  Applications are due into guidance
no later than April 23, 2012.

DONALD LEE SCHUL, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
This scholarship is open to students who have been active participants in a high school or county wrestling
program and have maintained a  minimum 2.5 unweighted gpa.  Applications are due into guidance no
later than April 23, 2012.

DREW SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants for this scholarship must have been accepted into an accredited college or university and plan
to pursue a degree in golf course turf management.  Applications are due into guidance no later than
May 30, 2012.

DR. PAUL VINEYARD SCHOLARSHIP – OPEN TO SENIORS
Applicants must plan to attend an accredited post secondary institution and enroll in a dental hygiene program.
Applications are due into guidance no later than May 30, 2012.
