Understanding Statement: Like the United States, Mexico had a long battle for independence. Mexico celebrates their independence from Spain on September 16 (not May 5).

 

Introduction: Did you know that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day? Many Americans assume that Cinco de Mayo is the equivalent of our July 4th, but today you are going to learn about September 16th, the day in which the famous shout of “Viva, Mexico” urged Mexicans to fight for their independence from Spain. Complete this Treasure Hunt to learn more about Mexico’s independence. Answer the questions below.

 

Questions:

1.  In what year did Mexico declare its independence? When was the war for independence finally won?

 

2.  Why did Mexico want to be independent from Spain?

 

 

3.  Explain the difference between “Gachupines” and “Criollos.”

 

4.  After the war, Mexico was very much a weakened country. Explain these weaknesses.

 

 

5.  Before the Spaniards arrived in Mexico, there were already many indigenous groups. Name at least three.

 

6.  Explain what “El Grito de Dolores” is and who first uttered it.

 

 

7.  Explain the re-enactment that happens at at 11 p.m. every year on September 15th in El Zócalo.

 

 

8.  What are some other ways that Mexicans celebrate this day?

 

 

9.  List at least three people that were important to the battle for independence and the role they played.
