Luncheon for SDHS Mentors
The Stephen Decatur High School Annual Mentoring Luncheon was held on May 17th in the SDHS cafeteria. Students and their mentors attended and enjoyed pizza, friendship, and prizes.
During the afternoon events, 13 senior received special recognition with the presentation of wooden keepsake boxes. Mentors received t-shirts and d certificates. Door prizes were also won.
Mentor advisor, SDHS senior guidance counselor, Karen White, explained, “We have this luncheon to celebrate our mentors, students and the end of the year. Eighty students had mentors. The mentors are teachers, educational aides, retirees, business leaders, police officers, Department of Juvenile Justice employees and former school employees.”
Mentor and SDHS art teacher and jv cheerleading coach Elizabeth Simpson explains, “In the photo I am visiting with one of my cheerleaders, Shakiyla Gordon. Even though I was not her mentor, we did work together for two years and she has really matured. This is a wonderful program because you get to know the students on a personal level and this creates a bond you don’t always get in the classroom. I was new to Decatur two years ago, so this also helped me to belong.”
SDHS Principal Louis H. Taylor concluded, “Our mentoring organization has been a highly rewarding partnership. Our students’ lives are enriched as they are encouraged on personal and academic levels.”
