Special education teacher, Karen Benson, has been selected as Stephen Decatur High School’s nominee for Worcester County Teacher of the Year.
Benson has been nominated by her 9th grade student, Olivia Tingle.  Tingle explains her reason for naming Benson, “Ms. Benson makes learning fun.  She has a sense of humor and she lets us knows we matter.”
“Competing for Worcester County Teacher of the Year is a rigorous opportunity to evaluate one’s self,” says Benson. “ A portfolio must be assembled that includes biographical information, educational training, philosophy of teaching, community involvement, letters of recommendation, and essays” adds Benson.
Mrs. Mandi Wells, SDHS colleague and supporter of Benson’s honor explains, “Karen takes the time to get to know her students.  She always creates a welcoming environment.”
Benson became a teacher because of another teacher, her second grade teacher Mrs. Garowski, who in Benson’s words, “she left a lasting impression on me that I hope to leave on my students.”
The Worcester County Teacher of the Year will be named at the banquet held at the Clarion on Tuesday, March 30th.  The Worcester County Teacher of the Year will then compete against all other county nominees for Maryland Teacher of the Year.
SDHS Principal Lou Taylor concludes, “Ms. Benson is very dedicated. She has a sharp focus on her students’ learning disabilities. She takes special pride in documenting where a student begins and how the student progresses. And as a teacher, every year, I see professional growth in Ms. Benson-her knowledge, her skills, her projects. She is a great candidate for Worcester County Teacher of the Year.”
